Thomas Mackerness discovered his deep love for music while visiting family in Australia at age 5. His cousins were really into rock & roll, Thomas sat at their drum kit and plucked their electric guitar for the first time discovering in those moments what would develop into a lifelong passion for music. He chose the electric bass at 11 years old and began lessons and jamming with friends. In high school, he was encouraged by award winning Jazz Music Educator, Curtis Gaesser, to get an upright bass and join the Folsom High Jazz Band and Choir. With Curtis’s inspiration he pursued a Bachelors of Music degree on the upright bass from CSU, Sacramento. His focus was classical performance, but he continued playing jazz in the Sac State Big Band and various jazz combos, while also composing and performing in a local art rock band that eventually toured the United States. Thomas has been an integral part of the Sacramento music scene ever since, adding deep rooted bass tones to the music of; Jessica Malone, Clast, The Stummies, Loose Engines, Sacto Soul Rebels, and many more. He’s also an electronic composer and recording engineer, and has been the music booking agent for a local music venue for the last 10 years.
He can help you learn electric and upright bass, and prepare you to play all genres. If you’re interested in performing with the school jazz band or orchestra, Thomas can give you the necessary tools to really shine as a bass player.
